Elegance

Movie stills from In the Mood for Love - My film for the week. Beautiful cinematography and intricate mise-en-scene! Deeply moved by the storyline and I am a sucker for well framed shots that are visually stunning and are laced with meaning. Not to mention the thousands of charming  cheongsams that Maggie Cheung wears (!! She’s so slender and pretty). Watching the film reminded me of a Pablo Neruda poem that I came across some time back and I think it ties in very nicely with the movie - with secret alleyway meetings, repressed emotions, and forbidden love.
Sonnet XVII, I do not love you
I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Week 10 of school and I can almost see the end. But before I even get a whiff of the sweet smell of Christmas (of roast turkeys, frankincense and family dinners), there’s still that last stretch of the semester to go, which is usually the busiest time for the undergrads.

Listing all that down did make me realise how much there is to do for the next 3 weeks (plus there’s still finals to study for!) T.T Alright, all that for a well-deserved December break where I will be singing in Bangkok and stargazing in Phuket seems pretty decent.
As the Chinese saying goes, 先苦后甜.
